Helping a Hoarder! (A Short Documentary)

A few weeks ago, India and a team from IndiaJazz decided to help out Dot, a woman who over 2020’s Covid lockdown had started a habit of hoarding, and it was getting out of control. This Documentary follows the efforts of both Dot and the cleaners in their journey to bring cleanliness back to a space in great need.

The clean went off without a hitch, with everyone feeling fulfilled, and rejuvenated.

Once it was all finished, Dot gave IndiaJazz her final thoughts: Hi India, I would firstly like to thank you all for helping me finally get to grips with my home. It certainly feels more manageable and I plan to use you again when ready to tackle the remaining areas. I have also been able to continue the good work and donated 4 bags of things to various charities.

As I said in the video I knew it would not feel comfortable and I would experience anxiety and embarrassment (to name a few of the many feelings I went through that day!) but it was necessary and I had put it off for so long which had only added to the amount of work required.

I would, perhaps, have a way to make and keep notes of anything mentioned at the start of the day as some of the things I mentioned to you were not done in the rush to get everything else sorted (i.e. the exerciser in the box was still in the box rather than opened and in my living room). Maybe even have a form that can be completed with the client that morning? (Then again I chose to stay out the way and let you all work which may have meant it was more likely for this to happen?).

The process of letting go of things can be so much more emotive than people realise and I cannot think of any one thing that might help other than continuing to be your friendly, open self, you certainly made the decision take the leap easier than I had anticipated.

I am very happy to help other prospective clients to ease their own process, whether that is talking in advance of the decision, supporting them on the day via telephone and, if needed even liaising with the team if you feel you would be better out of the way (once we are allowed out that is!). I think it is important to realise that it will never be comfortable, it is so easy to keep making excuses to put it off but that brings different discomfort and usually only delays the inevitable.

I once heard that not changing things may “steal the future” and I am now moving forward into my future with a tidier home which makes it easier to do so. If I think of anything in future I know you are open to feedback and want only to make the process as comfortable and effective as possible for your clients.

Thanks again, Dot S
