How to Prepare for Autumn: TIP TWO – CLEAN THE FIREPLACE

Are you blessed with a fireplace? It is so cool now and will be raining all day. So, to continue with our tips I thought I would talk you through how to clean your fireplace. You will really look forward to lighting it later this evening.

If the bricks of the fireplace need cleaning – try this. Mix 3 tablespoons of washing up liquid with ½ cup of baking soda to make a paste. It should be quite a thin paste for spreading. Apply using a fiber cloth onto the bricks and leave for a few minutes. Then remove with a clean cloth and warm water. Repeat the process until you think the bricks are clean enough. ts. Cleaning a fireplace is a messy job – but can be very satisfying. Do wear old clothes and rubber gloves. You may also wish to cover your hair.

These tips are NOT FOR CLEANING THE CHIMNEY. This needs a chimney sweep – please do not attempt it yourself!

Place a waste bin nearby and using a brush sweep the ash and soot from your fireplace. Do not forget it’s walls. Do it in small chunks to prevent the ashes flying around, and do it gently.

After you dumped the ashes into the trash, pick up the sheets carefully. If you are very sooty, change your clothes before vacuuming the floors and the furniture in the room. Make sure that any ash that escaped is collected.
