How to Prepare for Autumn: TIP ONE – DECLUTTER

Where did the summer go? Can you believe it is nearly the end of August? This means autumn is upon us. It is my favourite time of the year. The smells, the colours, and the lovely coolness – which for a professional cleaner is a blessing!

We are helping a few households to get ready for autumn. There are many things that need to be done to get your house ready and to make your life easier in the cooler months to come. This week we will be giving you tips on how to do this – by all means, if it all seems a bit daunting, you know whom to call!

The prospect of deep cleaning the house is enough to fill anybody with dread. I assure you, however – no need to panic. Follow my tips and do it in small chunks. A few tasks a day over one week – that’s the secret.

Let’s start this Tuesday.

Declutter

Start by going through your summer clothes and try to declutter. If you have not worn something or used something for 6 months, it generally means that you never will. Trust me. If you have the time – list unwanted items on Ebay or Gumtree. If you do not – consider giving it away to charity or advertising it for free collection on Facebook. Once you have decluttered it will be much easier to clean and maintain your spaces and your wardrobe.

Donate your unwanted food that is in date to food banks – there are a lot of families out there in desperate need of help.

When it comes to storing your summer clothes, I find that investing into vacuum packing works a treat. If you don’t then simply fold clean clothes and place into draws or boxes, whilst placing a couple of cotton wool disks anointed with cedarwood or peppermint essential oil to keep to moths away. Orange peel also works very well.

A lot of unwanted wrapping, packaging, and cardboard need not wait to be collected. If you have a garden, treat yourself to a little fire – burning the rubbish is tremendously therapeutic. Especially with a glass of something delicious in your hand!
