Series 2: Tips for Professional Cleaners. Tip 5 – SCRATCHES

This tip is all about scratches, somethings we really want to avoid as housekeepers, as it creates damage to our clients’ property.

I once (again, in my early days) bought some sponges that I wanted to use to get the grease off the inside of an oven.

I was scratching away with what I thought was a perfectly good scourer, and I was scratching away the inside of the oven, trying to get the grease off the glass inner door. When I got to rinse it off I was absolutely mortified, it left scratch marks all over the glass. You know, I always thought then you could not really scratch glass! Well, you can…

Another area to be aware of is obviously wood, which scratches very easily. Stainless steel scratches easily also – and often it can be a real showcase area in a client’s property.

So be very, very sure when you buy your sponge scourers that the packaging says “non-scratch” on it. On top of that, to be super sure, always test in a very inconspicuous area first, to make sure that it is suitable for the surface that you are cleaning.

On the other side of it, I often use Brillo pads – a fantastic natural cleaner that does not involve harsh chemicals. Brillo pads can often be used in places where you never really thought you could – you can use them on bath sinks, showers and it will not cause any damage. Again, always test on the surfaces before you actually start the cleaning.
