The answers are simple.
- Some citrus oils have antibacterial properties.
When combined with other natural ingredients, they can become safe, non-toxic, powerful cleaners that give an amazing finish as well as imbue the space with uplifting, energising fragrance.
I am sure most of us associate the smell of citrus – orange, lemon, bergamot (yes, bergamot is extracted from a citrus fruit – how old were you when you found that out?) – with freshness, cleanliness and that squeaky clean zing of a freshly wiped surface.
- Citrus oil helps dissolve grease, remove soap scum and hard water spots.
What can I say? Try it. It will make for a great home chemistry lesson – mix some citrus oil, white vinegar and water with your children (meaning, mix the ingredients in a spray bottle, don’t put your children into it, however tempting it might be for some!) – and have a go at cleaning your bathroom. Even if you mixed the ingredients incorrectly, I can guarantee you will immediately see, feel and smell the difference, without exposing yourself or your children to harsh chemicals.
- Traditional cleaners can harm your health.
Most traditional household cleaners are made with artificially derived components such as bleach and ammonia. When bleach is combined with other natural, safe cleaning agents like vinegar, it produces a toxic chlorine gas. Chlorine (even though widely used, particularly in medical cleaning and in places such as swimming pools, for example) is dangerous to inhale and can cause uncomfortable side effects such as burning eyes, skin irritation and respiratory problems. It can exacerbate asthma, psoriasis, eczema, hay fever, and a wide range of other skin and respiratory conditions.
Bathroom cleaners are the worst culprits of harsh synthetic ingredients like bleach and ammonia. It honestly makes me cringe watching bloggers using copious amounts of these, sometimes many times a day!
You can, of course, make your own household cleaner with vinegar, citrus oil and water. Alternatively, to save you hours of searching and waiting for these ingredients why not give one of our all natural cleaners a try? They are friendly on your skin, your surfaces, your pocket and the environment. Make a new friend!
